What is a Watershed?
An area of land that drains to a common waterbody. Smaller watersheds can be components of a larger watershed.
What watershed are we in?
Buffalo River Watershed
What defines the geology of a watershed?
substrate, water chemistry, stream shape( slope, sinuosity)
What determines a waterbody?
The interaction between surface water and ground water.
What is a waterbody?
a natural or man-made channel through which water flows or is stored.
Where do wetlands occur?
head waters, low lying areas in larger streams, along the edges of lakes and oceans
Why are wetlands important?
They are natural filtration systems, have high species diversity, nursery areas.....etc.
What is a stream?
a flowing waterbody that transports water, sediment, plants and debris
what is gradient?
the steepness of a stream
what is discharge?
the amount of water flowing through the stream.
what determines stream temperature?
climate, water source, elevation, riparian vegetation, and what is upstream.
why is monitoring and assessment important?
allows us to observe how a system changes over time or in response to changes, allows us to rate the general health of the system
what are some important water tests?
dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity/conductivity, chlorophyll A, turbidity/transparency, and pH
what are biological indices?
the use of biological communities to assess the health of a watershed
What is complete metamorphosis?
an insect changes form in all four stages of its life
Egg to larva to pupa to adult |
