Functions: permit diffusion of substances, secrete serous fluid.

Location: Lung and blood vessel lining

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Single row of cube-shaped cells

Functions: absorption and secretion, mucus production

Location: Liver, thyroid, mammary and salivary glands, bronchioles, and kidney tubules

Simple Columnar Epithelium

Single row of tall, narrow cells with microvilli

Oval nuclei in basal half of cell

Functions: absorption and secretion

Location: Lining of GI tract, uterus, kidney (stomach)

Pseudostratified Epithelium

Single row of ciliated cells, some not reaching free surface

Nuclei give layer a stratified look

Functions: secretes and propels respiratory mucus

*Have goblet cells that secrete mucus*

Location: trachea

Stratified Squamous - Keratinized

Multilayered epithelium covered with dead squamous cells, packed with keratin

Function: Retards water loss, barrier to organisms

Location: skin

Stratified Squamous - Nonkeratinized

Multilayered epithelium

Function: Forms moist, slippery layer

Location: tongue, esophagus, vagina

Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

2 or more cell layers; surface cells are square

Functions: secretes sweat, produces sperm and hormones

Location: sweat glands, ovaries, testes

Stratified Columnar Epithelium

2 cell layers; Superficial cells are columnar; deep cells are not

Function: secretion

Location: Salivary glands, pharynx, anus

Transitional Epithelium

Cell shape changes depending on nature of organ

Multilayered epithelial cells flatten when stretched

Allows for filling of urinary tract

Location: ureter, bladder
