ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS

changes that occur in the environment naturally or by humans that force organisms to adapt or become extinct

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS cause

habitat loss

SHORT TERM CHANGES IN ENVIRONMENT

occur:

quickly and affects organism's immediately.

( fast but still takes days, months or years to happen.)

NATURAL SHORT TERM CHANGES

are caused by drought, flooding, blizzards, forest fires, *earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruption, seasonal changes and tornadoes

SHORT TIME CHANGES CAUSED BY HUMANS

are smog, *pollution, *oil spills, agriculture,

* deforestation, over fishing, over hunting,

urbanization and energy

LONG TERM CHANGES IN ENVIRONMENT

occur:

slowly and allows organisms to adapt to the changes and affects for generations; genetic variations

(time to happen-hundred, thousands, millions of years)

NATURAL LONG TERM CHANGES

are caused by *earthquakes, plate movement, mountain building and temperature

LONG TERM CHANGES CAUSED BY HUMANS ARE:

global warming, * deforestation, * pollution,

*oil spills and radioactive toxic waste

OCEANS help:

regulate Earth's heat flow- which affects

weather patterns, water cycle and carbon cycle.

EARTH'S HEAT FLOW helps:

prevent global warming

OCEANS provide:

humans with both living and non-living

resources.

LIVING RESOURCES from the OCEAN are:

minerals, fuel, and water for use as/in food, detergents, shampoos, cosmetics, paints, ice cream and medicine.

NON-LIVING RESOURCES from the OCEAN are:

minerals, fuel (oil & natural gas),

water (desalination-removal of salt for fresh

water) for transportation and recreation

( boating,diving,surfing)

HUMAN DEPENDENCE ON OCEAN HAS

BOTH:

positive effects- artificial reefs

and

negative effects- over fishing, pollution

runoff- from household sewage and agriculture waste, oil drilling, and floating garbage.

AGRICULTURAL WASTE IN OCEAN CAUSES:

dead zones caused pesticides and mercury

deposits & global warming caused by coal burning factories.

GLOBAL WARMING

happens when ICE CAPS melt which causes sea levels to rise and more frequent hurricanes

OIL DRILLING CAN:

have leaks or oil spills that hurt or kill off ocean life

OVER FISHING

is the removal of fish faster than they can

reproduce- there are less or none

FLOATING GARBAGE causes:

premature deaths when ocean life feeds on the trash

ARTIFICIAL REEFS

are made by humans sinking old ships or oil rigs which allow coral to build and then attract ocean life,

DEFORESTATION

when humans cut down and clear all the trees in an area- kills plants and animals, and causes soil erosion.

SURFACE RUNOFF

when water flows over land and ends up in streams and other bodies of water

ALGAL BLOOM

when fertilizer enters water it causes large amounts of algae to grow and use up most of the available oxygen causing organisms to die.
