what is epistaxis? what are the predisposing factors?
bleeding from the nose. predisposing factors: trauma, nose picking, sinus infection, allergic or atrophic rhinitis, blood dyscrasias, tumor, environmental extremes (hot, dry climats, winters)
what is the usual cause of epistaxis?
rupture of superficial mucosal blood vessels (kiesselbach's plexus if anterior, sphenopalatine artery if posterior)
what is the most common type of epistaxis? what type is most serious?
anterior (90% of all epistaxis) is most common, usually the result of trauma. posterior is more serious, usually occurs in the elderly or is assoc. w/a systemic d/o (HTN, tumor, arteriosclerosis)
