Legitimacy |
- The daughter of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's 2nd wife. - Henry VIII created The Church Of England in order to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne instead, going against the beliefs of the catholics. - catholics questioned her legitimacy because of this and looked to Mary, Queen of Scots as an heir to the English throne. - She was also a protestant, which meant that catholics did not accept her. |

- Being a woman meant that people were doubtful if another queen could rule the country properly after Mary I's reign - Being a woman also meant she could not lead into battle. - Never married, despite the numerous proposals she was offered. |

Who made up Elizabeth's government and what did they do? |
- Monarch - Believed to be chosen by "Divine Right." Could declare war and peace, rule in legal cases, grant titles, lands, money and jobs. - Secretary of state - closest advisor, most importantly Privy Councillor. - Court - members of the nobility who entertained and advised the monarch. - Privy council - Leading courtiers, advisors, government officials. Discussed issues and gave monarch advice. - Parliament - house of lords/commons, called and dismissed by Elizabeth, few people could vote, granted money and passed laws. - Lords Lieutenant - One chosen per county by monarch, members of nobility, entrusted with raising and training the militia and enforcement of policies. - Justice - large landowners that kept law and order. |
