There are four elements of a Short Story:

Plot, Setting, Character, Theme

What is plot?

The series of related events that make up a story.

What are the seven major elements of plot?

Motivation, conflict, complications, suspense, climax, outcome/result, denouement/explanation.

What is denouement?

The final part where things are explained or resolved.

How many major conflicts are there in a short story?

One

How many types of character are there to know?

Seven

What are the seven types of character to know?

Protagonist, antagonist, round, flat, dynamic, static, stock.

What is a protagonist?

The main character who the reader identifies with and who has a goal to achieve.

What is an antagonist?

The character or force that opposes the protagonist.

What is a round character?

Has many sides and has a complex personality (has more than three characteristics).

What is a flat character?

A minor character who is not developed.

What is a dynamic character?

A character who does go through a change.

What is a static character?

A character who does not go through any change.

What is a stock character?

The stereotypical character.

What is the setting of a story?

Time and place in which the story takes place.

When reading anything, always ask yourself,

"what is the significance of the setting?"

What is theme of a story?

The underlying message that the author is trying to convey. Is a generalization about life. Universal so everyone can relate in some way to the story.

When writing a theme, use a

thematic statement.

First person:

The story is told by the protagonist or another character that interacts closely with the protagonist or other characters (using I, me, we). The reader sees the story through this person's eyes as she/he experinces it and only know what she/he feels.

Objective:

The author tells the story in third person. There is no comment on the character or their thoughts. The reader is placed in the position of spectator and has to interoet events in their own.

Limited omniscient

The story is told by a third person narrator but from the viewpoint of a charcter in the story. The reader has access to the thoughts and feelings of only one character.

Omniscient

Literally means all knowing. This point of view moves from character to character, event to event, having free access to thougts, feelings, and motivation of any character and can access information whenever they choose to.

How many types of irony are there?

Three

Dramatic irony:

Is where the audience is aware of something that the characters in the story are not aware of.

Verbal irony:

The use of words to mean something different from what the person says. Used intentionally.

Situational irony

Is when the opposite of what is meant to happen, happens.
