conflict
The struggle between the protagonist, the main charachter and antagonist, onw who creates stress for the main character.
external conflict
A struggle between the protagoist and someone else.
Internal conflict
A struggle the protagoist feels within himself ,opposing ideas or feelings.
Flashback
When action is interrupted and the story goes back in tim to fill in certain details, then returns to the present time.
Foreshadowing
Author's use of hints or clues to things that may occur. These create suspence.
Suspence
Excitment, anxiety anticipation etc. regarding an outcome.
Scenery/Setting
The things and surrounding area that can be found wherever the characters are.
Exposition
Backround information which sets the scene of the story. Info. which helps reader to understand somthing about the characters and there actions later in the story.
Rising action
Events which force decisicions from the protagonist. These create dilemmas, stress and anxiety for the protagonist.
Climax
The most dramatic point in the story, when the reader sees whether the protagonists situation and problems will improve or not. The turning point in the story.
Falling Action
The immediate activity or results after the climax. The results that follow the desicion or turning point in the story.
Resolution
This shows how the problems are worked out most of the time. The loose ends of the story get tied up unanswered questions are addressed satisfactorily for the reader.
Protagonist
The main character, the good guy, the one with whom we sympathsize.
Antatagonist
The character or thing which represents a conflict for the protagonist, the bad guy.
Direct Characterization
Writer tells reader directly what character is like she was friendly.
Indirect Characterization
Reader learns about character through her speech actions thoughts others opinions etc.
First Person Point Of View
The narrorator particapates in the action of the story. I went to the store...

Third Person Point Of View
The narrorator does not particiapate in the story. They went to the store...
Omniscent Point Of View
The narrorator lets us into the mind and thoughts of more than one person im the story.
Theme
A lesson or truth about life the author wants to explore teach and reveal.
Symbol
Something which stands for or represents something more significant than itself wedding rin diploma drivers license etc.
Irony
The opposite of what you might expect to happen.
Verbal Irony
Character says one thing means another
Dramatic Irony
Audience understands something the character doesnt.
Situational Irony
The discrepancy between what character thinks its true and what is actually true.
Simile
The comparison between 2 or more unlike things using the words like or as.
Metaphor
The comparison between 2 or more unlike things not using the words like or as.
Imagery
Detail description of a scene person or event the more specific the detail the sharper the imagery.
