The ease with which people can get to a particular place
Development
The way a country progresses and improves over time, usually measured by rising incomes and better quality of life

Energy resources
The means of providing motive force, heat or light. They include electricity, gas, steam and nuclear power as well as fuels such as coal, oil and wood
Energy consumption
The amount of energy used by individuals, groups or countries
Energy Gap
The difference between the demand for energy, and the supply of it. The gap is made worse by the phasing out of fossil fuel use
Finite energy resource
Energy resources which have a fixed stock and will eventually run out. such as coal, oil and gas
Fossil fuels
Carbon fuels such as coal, oil and gas that cannot be 'remade' because it will take millions of years for them to form again
Global shift
The movement of manufacturing from HICs to cheaper production locations in LICs
High-tech industry
Economic activities that rely on advanced scientific research and produce new, innovative and technologically advanced products, such as microchips, genetic engineering, communications and information technology.
Informal employment
Types of work that are not officially recognised over which there is little or no official control
Non-renewable resource
A material that cannot be restored after use e.g. fossil fuels and minerals
Primary sector
Economic activities concerned with the working of natural resources- agriculture, fishing, mining and quarrying.
Quaternary sector
Economic activities that provide highly skilled services such as collection and processing information, research and development
Raw material
Anything that occurs in a natural state and that is useful to people
Renewable resource
A resource which is not diminished when it is used; it recurs and cannot be exhausted e.g. wind and tidal energy
Secondary sector
Economic activities concerned with making things, such as cars, buildings and electricity
Sectoral shift
The gradual change from an economy based on primary sectors, to one based on secondary to an economy based on tertiary and quaternary
Tertiary sector
Activities that provide a wide range of services and enable goods to be traded
Transnational company (TNC)
A huge enterprise which operates on a global scale and is involved in a wide variety of businesses
