Saftey

Hydraulic fluid decomposed by heat, toxic gases are released

Contact with liquid/mist causes dermatitis and irritation to skin and eyes

Ensure all personally are clear of moving flight controls when turning on hydraulics

Hydraulic power system

Provides hydraulic pressure to operate flight controls servos, rotor brake and APU accumulator

Measuring particle contamination

Portable oil diagnostic system (PODS)

Used to measure metallic and non-metallic contamination levels in A/C and SE that lead to system failure

Patch testing - used as a last resort

Used to measure metallic and non-metallic contamination levels in A/C and SE that lead to system failure

Maximum contamination level are Navy class 5 for A/C and Navy class 3

#1 pump

Mounted on and driven by port accessory module

Provides hydraulic pressure to the first stage of primary servos and first stage of tail rotor servo

#2 pump

Mounted on and driven by starboard accessory module

Provides hydraulic pressure to the second stage primary servos and pilot-assist servo assembly

Backup pump

Supplies pressure to the #1 and #2 hydraulic systems prior to rotor engagement

Only source of hydraulic pressure to rescue hoist, recharges APU accumulator, and provides emergency hydraulic pressure to #1 and #2 pumps when pressure loss occurs

Powered by alternating current (AC) electrical motor

Reservoir level-indicator

Red, green and blue indicators

Pressure and return filter with red PDI

Utility pump

Provides hydraulic pressure for carriage, stream, tow and recovery system (CSTRS) winch

Powered by main transmission

#1 transfer module

Located inboard of transmission-driven pump

Connects hydraulic pressure to flight controls servos like

Routes fluid from #1 pump to 1st stage of primary servos and 1st stage of tail rotor servo

Automatically route fluid from backup pump if #1 system is lost

#2 transfer module

Located inboard of transmission-driven pump

Connects hydraulic pressure to flight controls servos

Identical to #1, except incorporates second-stage primary servo shutoff valve

Selector valve

Directs hydraulic fluid from hand pump reservoir (holds 1.3 quarts) to the three pump modules or to the rotor brake master cylinder

Priority valve

While backup pump is supplying pressure to #2 tail rotor servo, priority valve may secure hydraulic pressure to the rescue hoist due to low system pressure

Opens at minimum pressure of 2,500 psi, closes at 2,150-2,250 psi

Reservoirs

Attached to #1 pump

Attached to #2 pump

Attached to backup pump

Servicing reservoir in hydraulics bay

Utility reservoir aft of MGB in oil cooler section

Servos

Flight controls servos convert pilot and copilot control movements into appropriate motion on the main and tail rotors

Primary servos

3 primary dual stage servos position and absorb feedback forces from main rotor

In the even of single-stage failure, other stage is capable of handling flight controls loads

Tail rotor servo

Dual-stage, controls position and absorb feedback from tail rotor

Normally only pressurized by the first stage (second stage is automatically pressurized in event of first stage lost)

Pilot assist servos (Boost)

Collective boost, pitch trim, pitch boost, and yaw boost

Reduce loads at the collective sticks

SAS and DAFCS signals are applied to these services to Sid in stabilizing helicopter

Rescue hoist

Electrically controlled and hydraulically powered winch

Provides means if rescuing downed personnel

Has a load capacity if 600 lbs and has 0 to 215 ft-per-minute speed capability in either direction

Located on stbd side on A/C
