A fundimental prmise of plate tectonics is that the Earth's surface is made of distinct plates. What are the kinds of evidence that have led geoscientists to conclude this?
There are plate boundaries where we see different plate margins, tectonic activity, and we see different ages of rocks
Where these plates interact is where a significant fraction of the tectonic activity occurs. There are three basic active plate boundary types. What are they?
Divergent
Convergent
Transform
Divergent plate boundaries
-Moving away from eachother
-Spreading center and rifts
-Making new ocean floors
*prime example Mid Atlantic Ridge
-Ridges moving away
-Magnetic polarity can be reversed or normal
Convergent plate boundaries
-Subduction & collision zones
-Moving toward eachother
-Deep earthquakes are found here
Transform Plate boundaries
-Plates move horizontally past one another
-Link other types of plate boundaries
-Connecting spreading centers
What is convection and how does it work?
6 steps
Convection is heat transfer inside of the earth. It works by....
1) rock material at the bottem gets hotter than surroundings
2) Heat causes it to expand
3) Because it is the same material in more volume, the density decreases
4) Less dense makes it float to the surface
5) It cools and gets more dense
6) as it gets more dense it sinks and the process repeats
