HIV/AIDS

Do not take with ketoconazole, itraconazole, Cipro

Oral Contraceptives

Do NOT take with: Erythromycin, penicillin, rifampin, tetracycline, Tegretol,Dilantin, Phenobarbital, Diflucan, Nizoral, and Sporonox.

Antidepressants

None of these, whether TCAs or SSRIs should be taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors(MAOIs). MAOIs interact with everything like cheeses, wine, and other anti-depressants and they need a "wash out period" aka 2 weeks of no drugs. Ex of MAOIs: phenelzine/Nardil, selegiline/Eldepryl, tranylcypromine/Parnate

Anemia:


*ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) - Feosol


*ferrous gluconate - Fergon


*ferrous fismarate - Feostat iron

interferes with TCN; stains teeth - so the liquid iron for children should be dissolved in juice beforeadministered.

Thrombolytics- dissolves clots quickly


examples: 1) Streptokinase 2) Urokinase

interacts with anticoagu1ants, anti-platelet drugs, and NSAIDS = increase bleeding

Anticoagulants: Heparin or Warfarin

Interacts with antibiotics,NSAIDS

Antacids

Given one hour after a meal to neutralize the stomach acid for two hours. The active ingredients usuallyare magnesium, aluminum or calcium carbonate or any combination.Magnesium causes diarrhea and aluminum causes constipation.Concern: Antacids absorb other drugs which reduce their effect in the body so it is necessary to spacedrugs far apart as possible.

Antifungal & Topical Corticosteroids

Max dose is 40-50g in one week. Cannot be used more than a two week period due to absorption and thinning of the skin

metronidazole (Flagyl)

Alcohol will make them throw up.Alcohol is in cough syr., mouthwashes, and marinated food.

Tetracyclines (TCN)

Fatal if expired- this is on testWill discolor teeth in <8 yrolds. No antacids or dairy

Penicillins (PCN) & Cephalosporins

5-10% of people who are allergic to penicillins will also be allergic to cephalosporins. This is called cross-sensitivity. Dr’s will usually write forerythromycins.

Antibiotics: Biaxin (clarithromycin), Omnicef (cefdinir), Zithromax (azithromycin)

- if put in the refrigerator the cold will cause them to crystallize


- just remember these are room temp and all other recons will be refrigerated.

Narcotic antagonist (blocker)

Naloxone which is used in case of an overdose. This drug blocks the absorption of thenarcotic.
