reference points
from the driver's seat see some part of the vehicle as it relates to some part of the roadway, to show where the vehicle is actually located on the roadway
LOS
Line of Sight
POT
Path of Travel
5 lane positions
-
HTS
Highway Transportation System
1. Driver
2. Vehicle
3. Roadway
each part of the HTS presents its own risks. When risk factors combine when we drive, crashes are more likely to occur!
A Target
is a fixed object in the center of your intended path of travel (POT).
Targeting
involves looking for targets with your eyes far out to the target area.
Road signs: red octagon w/ white letters and white border
STOP sign
-means come to full stop
White or red triangle
Yield sign
-slow down or stop, give right of way to traffic
White rectangle with black letters
Speed limits
-tells you what to do
Yellow diamond
-warn of danger ahead
Yellow house shape with black letters
-either means a school zone or school crossing
Yellow side-ways triangle (penant) with black letters
-No passing
Orange diamond or rectangle
-construction zone
Signs with an X
railroad
Internation signs
help when driving because drivers from other countries don't have to learn multiple languages, but can still understand the instructions with symbols.
The difference between broken yellow lines and broken white lines
is that yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions (two-way), and broken white lines separate lanes of traffic that are moving in the same direction.
The difference between a shared left-turn lane and a left-turn lane
is that a shared left-turn lane is shared by both directions of traffic and is in the center of the road where as the left-turn lane is only used by the direction of traffic respective to its placement on the road
Yielding and Right of Way at intersections
2 Rules:
1st come, 1st serve
and
Sametime Rule
1st come, 1st serve Rule
states that the vehicle that arrives 1st has the right of way
Sametime Rule
states that when two or more vehicles arrive at the same time, we must always yield to the vehicle on our right before we go
Never insist on
your right of way
3 Visual Searching Ranges
continually evaluate to gain control of POT:
1. Target Area Range
2. 12-15 Second Range
3. 4-6 Second Immediate Range
Corrosion Terminals on battery
-blue and/or white corrosion is acid from battery
fix: take mix of baking soda & water, put on terminal
Loose Connection on battery
to tell: yank on cables and if budge then fix.
fix: take wrech and tighten cables
Scanning
keeping your eyes moving to notice sudden side movements
Clearing
turning your head to visually check all points of an intersection
Searching
looking far ahead as possible to make judgements and predictions
Rear Zone Control
periodically checking your rearview mirror
Who is required by law to wear safety belts?
everyone
the Primary Law
occupants 17 and under are subect to this and it means that you can be pulled over for JUst not wearing your belt.
the Secondary Law
-the officer must have some reason other that the seat belt to pull you over
-people 18 and over are subject to this
Who is responsible for everyone buckling up?
the driver
Seat belt fine per person 1st offense
$25.00
Seat belt fine per person 2nd offense
$50.00
Seat belt fine per person 3rd offense
$100.00
Adrust seat to
no closer that 10" from steering wheel
Adjust headrest to
ear level
What is meant by "Butt in"
lower back fully supported by seat
Penny Test
put Abe Lincoln's head upside down in tread, if see head not 1/16" (not legal)
Wearbar
a little peice of metal in middle of tire tread
Pressure
align the pressure gauge with the valve stem, quickly punch w/thumb
leek could come from around the rim of the tire or in between the valve stem and teh rim or it could be inside the valve stem (or in the tread)
To check where leak is in the tire:
pour water on the suspect area, if it bubbles there is a leak right there
Hydroplaning
is a loss of control of a vehicle which results in the vehicle's tires losing contact with the roadway as it slides over water
Causes of a Hydroplane
1. Driving too fast for wet conditions
2. Tires in poor condition (treadwear, inflation)
3. Turning your steering wheel too fast to make turns
To recover from a hydroplane
1. Don't Panic
2. Hold wheel firmly
3. Don't slam on the brakes
4. Take foot off accelerator
5. Look, steer in direction you want to go
6. Don't over correct steering
PSI range
32-36
PSI in hot weather
32
PSI in cold weather
36
The P in PSI means
Pressure
Alignment assures that
tires meet road at 90 degree angles
You will know if your tires are out of alignment if
1. steering wheel shakes
2. car will list to right or left (vears, usually right)
3, Uneven tire wear
Rotation
should be rotated every 6,000 miles assures even treadwear
-a mechanic rotates the tires on a lift
-LB switches w/RF and RB switches w/LF
Tread
must have a minimum of 1/16 of an inch of tread depth
PART
Pressure
Alignment
Rotation
Tread

(all about condition of tires)
Lap belt
low and snug on hips, bottom of belt touches top of leg, no twists
Shoulder belt
adjusted so that you can comfortably fit your fist between breast bone and belt
Lane Changes
use SMDG
SMDG
Signal
Mirrors
Over shoulder
Go
Basic Speed Law
a safe driver always drives according to "conditions" not necessarily at the maximum posted speed limit
4 road conditions to consider
1. Visibility (weather)
2. Road conditions
3. Driver condition
4. Vehicle condition
Hidroplaning
tires are literally Lifted up from the road and slide over water
Legal limit of of alcohol for drivers under 21
is .02 BAC
Can a driver be impaired with BAC's under the legal limits?
yes
Blind spots of large trucks
(called No Zones)
4 major blind spots
Following distance behind a large truck under good conditions
6 secs
Four-way flashers
means the truck is traveling below the minimum speed limit
You can tell if you are in a truck's blind spot when
you can't see his face in his mirror
Passing a large truck
don't pull into right lane until see both headlights in rearview mirror
Buffeting
-
Drafting
-
Off-tracking
-
Wide right issues
-
being passed by large truck
-
Right of way
is the privilege of having immediate use of a certain part of a roadway. A driver only has the right of way when another driver gives it to him, it is not something that is possible to take.
Crossing an intersection with your car takes how long when starting from a stop?
four to five seconds
Moose
-stupid, makes them unpredictable
hair absorbes light
eyes don't reflect headlights
weight: 800 - 1,500 lbs
Height - legs are long, car cuts them from under
Body - through windshield into driving compartment
very unstable when running (top heavy)
can run 30-35 mph
salt in road that moose likes to lick
driving strategy with moose
scan roadway
if collision is imminent
avoid hitting moose!
driving strategy with small animals
if can't avoid, drive straght for the animal. (it may dart right or left, go under the vehicle), if you swerve you may roll the car or hit a tree
Comprehensive Insurance
covers "Acts of God"
-fire, hit a deer, flood
When considering buying a vehicle do the following:
1. ask to test drive
2. permission for your mechanic to check it out
3. ask for maintenance history
4. ask about previous owners (age&sex)
5. ask where vehicle was previously owned (part of country/VT)
6. Check facts on Carfax
Deprication

-
Left on red
-
Stale Green
-
Fresh Green
-
3 things you must have in the car at all times
license, registration, proof of insurance
Deer
Hair and eyes reflect headlights
weight not significant
height not a factor
Travel in pairs, groups
like the salt that's in the road
driving strategy with deer
scan the roadway continuously
see one, assume more on either side
if collision collision is imminent, don't swerve to avoid hitting deer
as go down hill
gravity will increase speed, unless control it by coverin brake or downshifting
Alcohol
depressant drug, not a stimulant
not digested in our stomachs like other food, almost immediatel enters the blood stream through the stomach lining, and quickly flows to the part of our brain that governs judgement, reasoning, and inhibitions
