7 - Sporting, Nonsporting, Herding, Hound, Toy, Working, and Terrior

Describe the Sporting Group

Likeable, well-rounded companions. Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many participate in field activities. Examples: Retrievers, Pointers, Setters, and Spaniels

Describe Hound Group

Creates a unique sound of baying. Examples are Pharaoh Hounds and Beagles

Describe Terrior Group

Feisty, energetic dogs who's sizes range from small to large. Little tolerance for other dogs, and their ancestors were bred to hunt and kill vermon. Examples are West Highland White Terrior and Airedale Terrior

Describe Working Group

Bred to perform jobs such as guarding property, pulling sleds, and performing water rescues. Examples include Doberman Pinscher, Siberian Husky, and Great Dane

Describe Herding Group

Has the ability to control the movement of other animals. Examples include Border Collie

Describe Toy Group

Popular with city dwellers and make terrific lap dogs. Example is the Chihuahua and Pomeranian

How long is a females gestation period?

61-63 days

Increase in appetite and activity. Size of nipples get bigger. Increased size in abdomen

What does a female do after giving birth?

Licks to remove mucus, cuts umbilical cord, and puts the puppy by her breast to begin feeding

Adequate diet and clean water must be supplied. Beginning at 3 weeks of age, clean water should be supplied at all times

Types of food?

Dry, semi-moist, and canned

Dry

Main ingrediants: corn, soybean meal, wheat killings, meat, and bone meal. 10% moisture. Advantages: cheaper and convenient, will not spoil, and keeps dogs teeth clean

Semi-Moist

Ingredients: Corn, meat by-product, soybean meal, corn syrup. 30% moisture.

Canned

Ration type: contains barley, meat by-product, wheat grain, and soy flour. Meal type: meat by-product, meat, poultry, and soy flour. 75% moisture

Feeding requirements for pregnant and lactating female

Amount should increase as weight increases (may be up 50% more than before). Following whelping, female will need 4 meals a day - should be the same as before giving birth

Feeding puppies

Begin to lap solid food at about 3 weeks. Milk, meat, eggs, and cottage cheese make ideal food. As they grow, feed commercial foods as activity and metabolism increases - should be fed 3 to 4 times a day

Feeding old dogs

Metabolism slows down and their need for calories decreaes. Feed a ration with adequate protein and nutrients. Do not overfeed - feed small meals several times a day
