What are the two types of probes?

What are they made of?

• Radioactively labelled - using P(32) which can be identified using x-ray photography

• fluorescent - a DNA probe that will fluoresce under certain conditions

• They are short single-strands of DNA that are easily identified

What are DNA probes used for?

To identify specific alleles of a gene by joining onto its complimentary bases

What are the different steps?

DNA probe that is complimentary to the desired allele is added

• DNA that a being tested is treated to seperate the two stands

• Seperate strands are mixed with the DNA probe which will bind to its complimentary base sequence - called DNA hybridisation

• Binding site of probe identified
