At the beginning of the Roman Republic, who had power? Who didn’t have power?

At the beginning of the Roman Republic, the Patricians had all the power, and the plebeians had no power.

Why did the plebeians leave Rome in 494 B.C.E.?

The plebeians left Rome in 494 B.C.E because they were angry that the patricians had all the power and they had no power.

Roman society was made up of mostly what group?

Roman society was made up of mostly plebeians.

Describe the balance of political power in 287 B.C.E. between the patricians and the plebeians.

The balance of political power in 287 B.C.E. between the patricians and the plebeians was roughly equal. At this point in time, both groups had political rights.

Much like the plebeians of ancient Rome, many groups have fought to gain civil rights. Compare the similarities between the struggles of the plebeians of ancient Roman society and the struggles of african americans.

The plebeians of ancient Rome and the african americans struggled in similar ways to gain civil rights. First of all, just like the plebeians did not mix socially with the patricians, african americans did not mix with white men. Also, both groups were not allowed to be involved in government. The plebeians were not allowed to be consuls or senators, and the african americans were not allowed to vote or be president. Both groups wanted equality. They both did not use violence to get what they wanted. The plebeians simply left the city, and the african americans started the Civil Rights Movement, a popular, non-violent movement to secure basic rights for african americans. Both were successful and earned equality, because the african americans gained rights that the whites had and the plebeians gained political rights that the patricians had. Lastly, both groups were able to run for important positions after they got equality. African americans were able to run for president, and plebeians were able to become Senators and consuls.
