Armagnac is...

a grape brandy.

3 Main differences from Cognac

A wider range of grapes are permitted, distilled to a lower ABV & are allowed to make unaged brandies.

10 Varieties are permitted. These 4 dominate

Ugni Blanc. Baco. Folle Blanche. Colombard.

Baco

2nd most widely planted (32%). Unique to Armagnac - rich earthy, prune flavoured.

King - 55% of plantings.

Alambic Armagnacais, which is ideally suited to making low strength spirit.

Alambic Armagnacais still properties

Single column still that can run continuously but limited to 17 plates.

Grapes are typically distilled separately

but can be distilled one after the other.

European oak is used for maturation

for at least 1 year.

Age of spirit is measured from

1st April following the vintage.
