Is the liver encapsulated?
yes
What doe the falciform ligament do for the liver?
separates it and secures the liver to the anterior abdominal wall
What are hepatic lobules?
where the liver's connective tissue capsule branches through the liver and forms septa that partition the liver into thousands of small, polyhedral "hepatic lobules"
What are the structural and functional units of the liver?
hepatic lobules
what are liver cells called?
hepatocytes
What brings arterial and venous blood to the liver?
arterial blood comes from hepatic arteries
Venous blood comes from hepatic portal vein
What do the hepatic lobules of the liver contain?
hepatocytes
What is at the periphery of each lobule, and what are these structures composed of?
portal triads, branches of the hepatic portal vein, branches of the hepatic artery, branches of the hepatic duct
What makes up the portal triad?
hepatic portal vein, artery, and duct
What benefit does a dual blood supply serve the liver?
To mix the blood and pass it to and through the hepatic lobules
What organs does the hepatic portal vein carry blood from?
Capillaries of the GI tract, spleen, and pancreas (provides 75%) of the blood volume to the liver
The hepatic portal vein carries what type of blood to the liver?
rich in nutrients and other absorbed substances but is relatively poor in oxygen
What carries well-oxygentated blood to the liver? describe the path back to the heart.
the hepatic artery proper, from the celiac trunk (or artery) from the descending abdominal aorta from descending thoracic aorta from the aortic arch from the ascending aorta from the left ventricle of the heart
What is the "hub" of the hepatic lobule?
central vein
what would be at the circumference fo the hepatic lobule?
portal traids
What would the numerous spaces of the hepatic lobule?
hepatic sinusoids
What are hepatic sinusoids?
thin-walled and leaky capillaries where venous and arteral blood are mixed and then flow slowly toward the central vein.
What are teh sinusoids lined with?
stellate cells called "reticuloendothelial cells"
What do reticuloendothelial cells do?
located in the liver, phagocytize debris in blood as well as help break down and recycle components of aged erythrocytes and damaged or worn-out formed elements.
Nutrients are absorbed from the sinusoids and enter what cellular strucutre?
hepatocytes
What is sandwiched between each cord of hepatocyte?
bile canaliculus which conduct bile from teh hepatocytes to the hepatic duct in the portal triad
Where is bile produced, where is it stored?
in liver
