Define peristalsis |
Involuntary contraction and relaxation of muscle in tubular structures (esophagus, intestines) creating wavelike movements that push the contents of the tube forward |
|
What are the two sphincters of the stomach? |
Cardiac - food entering stomach Pyloric- food exiting the stomach |
|
How do both chemical and mechanical digestion occur in the stomach? |
Gastric juices, consisting enzymes and mucous, breakdown the proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The mucous acts as a protective layer, preventing self digestion and ulcers. The enzymes lipase, and renin along with pepsinogen (activates by HCL to be pepsin) partially digest the contents of the stonach. The muscular churning of the stomach allows the two contents to mix. |
