How we explain development and advice we give depends on
‘theory of development’
Theories are influenced by two issues :
1. Nature(biologicalfactors)orNurture(environment) 2. ContinuousorDiscontinuousdevelopment
Predeterminists
environment plays a minor role; maturation has the major role.
Environmentalists (behaviourists)
environment has pre-eminent role.
Interactionists
both nature and nurture play a part.
Continuous development:
Learning Theories – continuity in development. Changes are quantitative rather than qualitative
Discontinuous development
Stage Theories – discontinuity in development. Stages represent periods when there is qualitative change
Normative - descriptive:
Growth gradients- Gesell.
Involves description of the normal or average status of children on specified characteristics at different age levels descriptive or age norms.
Development is intrinsically guided - predeterministic Stressed precise observations to establish accurate
norms.
Described typical traits and growth trends
