What is God to Descartes?
God alone is the eternal source of all being, and the existence of everything else is dependent on Him. God is the source of motion.
What are the three kinds of substances?
God substance, created finite spiritual substance, and created finite material substance
Define God substance
God substance is the infinite, uncreated being that depends on nothing other than itself in order to exist. The essence of God is innately known to us. God is the eternal source of all being.
Define Created Finite spiritual substance
the essence of human spiritual substance is to think and have thoughts. It is not extended; it is intangible, invisible, and non-spatial. It is not confined to bodies and does not need physical substance in oder to exist. It meets physical substance in the pineal gland in the brain. Its primary attribute: thoughts
Define Created Finite Material Substance
It occupies space, exists in time, is tangible, visible, and divisible. Its primary attribute is extension. Nothing belongs to physical things but extension in space, length, breadth, depth, in various sizes and shapes, and in motion. Colors, sounds, and tastes do not belong in the material substance.
What is extension to Descartes?
the qualities which reason knows by a clear and distinct idea to constitute the true nature of physical things.
What are colors, tastes, and sounds to Descartes?
they are not qualities necessary to the existence of the physical things. They are qualities that exist only in us. They are adventitious, coming to us from things outside us in the world.
What are primary qualities?
qualities necessary to a physical thing - size, shape, and the capacity of motion.
What is mechanism?
Descartes' theory of the physical universe, the theory that all of nature can be explained by the mechanical motion of material substances. The world is infinite of extension, with bodies of all shapes and sizes continually moving and changing.
What is dualism?
Dualism is the notion that there are two different kinds of substances in nature. These substances are the spiritual and the corporeal. mind, body. thoroughly independent of the other
Could a substance continue to exist if it lost its essence?
No. If substance did lose essence, it could no longer function, and it would no longer be known or knowable.
