Substance dualism

The idea that two elements (mind and body) are completely different .

Eg - Descartes , Gilbert Ryle

Descartes

•often questioned whether the material body and his mind were an illusion - or whether there is knowledge so certain known may doubt it .

COGITO - ‘I think therefore I am’- suggesting logical implication

“There is a great difference between a mind and a body because the body is by nature divisible but the mind is not”

Descartes adapted a system of doubt to identify what is certain - therefore suggesting that the mind and body can not interconnect because the mind is simply spiritual whereas our bodies are non- spiritual and material.
