Populations

A group of the same species in a community

Communities

A group of populations of two or more species living in the same area.

True predators

They hunt and kill their prey e.g lions, barn owls and whales

Parasites/grazers

The predator is still hunting and feeding on the prey but it doesn't kill the prey. Parasites generally have a relationship with the prey, grazers normally don't. (Flea=parasite, mosquito=grazers)

Parasitoids

Live off the prey but differ from parasites as they normally kill their prey (eventually). E.g the wasps in the Holly leaf miner

Obligate parasites

A parasite that has to have a relationship with the host for its life cycle to continue.

Decomposer

Break down dead organisms with enzymes e.g fungi, bacteria

Detritivore

Consume decaying organisms e.g worms, millipedes, wood lice
