Populations |
A group of the same species in a community |
|
Communities |
A group of populations of two or more species living in the same area. |
|
True predators |
They hunt and kill their prey e.g lions, barn owls and whales |
|
Parasites/grazers |
The predator is still hunting and feeding on the prey but it doesn't kill the prey. Parasites generally have a relationship with the prey, grazers normally don't. (Flea=parasite, mosquito=grazers) |
|
Parasitoids |
Live off the prey but differ from parasites as they normally kill their prey (eventually). E.g the wasps in the Holly leaf miner |

Obligate parasites |
A parasite that has to have a relationship with the host for its life cycle to continue. |
|
Decomposer |
Break down dead organisms with enzymes e.g fungi, bacteria |
|
Detritivore |
Consume decaying organisms e.g worms, millipedes, wood lice |
