CVA

Cerebrovascular Accident

2 types of CVA

Ischemic stroke & hemorrhagic stroke

Ischemic stroke

Occurs when arteries are blocked by blood clots or by gradual build-up of plaque and other fatty deposits.

..Blockage of blood supply

.. 80% of strokes

Hemorrhagic Stroke

When a brain aneurysm bursts or a weakened blood vessel leaks into the brain.

3 types of ischemic strokes

Cerebral Thrombotic

Embolic

Lacunar

Cerebral Thrombotic

Blood clot forms in one of the arteries supplying the brain causing vascular obstruction at the point of its formation.

Embolic

Occurs when a blood clot that has formed elsewhere (thrombosis) breaks off (embolus) & travels up to the brain cutting off blood supply & oxygen

Lacunar

Small infracts occurring deep in the brain. Lunar effects small branch vessels that are attached to the middle cerebral artery.

2 types of hemorrhagic strokes

Intracerebral hemorrhage

Subrachnoid hemorrhage

Intracerebral hemorrhage

Direct bleeding into the brain. Most common Is chronic hypertension or chronic high blood pressure

Subarachnoid hemorrhage

Bleeding occurring within the brains surrounding membranes & cerebrospinal fluid. Common from an aneurysm.

Act F.A.S.T

Act fast call 911 or go to nearest stroke center

FIM

Measure Functional Performance

Instrument is a basic indicator of patients disability. This is used to track changes in the functional ability of a patient during a stay at a hospital or rehab center

Rating in a FIM

1-7 rating

Diffrence between Iscemia and Infarct

Ichemia: lack of blood flow or oxygen; can lead to infarct

Infarct: dead tissues due to lack of oxygen
