What does an Antacid do to digestion?
Decreases digestion
If you take hydrochloric acid tablets or enzyme tablets, what does that do to digestion?
Increases digestion
Bile, which is stored in the Gallbladder, does what in the digestion process?
Bile acids causes fat globules to break down or be emulsified into minute, microscopic droplets. Emulsification is not digestion per se, but is of importance because it greatly increases the surface area of fat, making it available for digestion by lipase, which cannot access the inside of lipid droplets.
What is Lipase?
An enzyme that the body uses to break down fats so they can be absorbed in the intestine.
What is Tripsin?
An enzyme that is secreted by The pancreas that hydrolyzes proteins into smaller polypeptide units (peptones, peptids, and amino acids).
What is Amylase?
An enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of starch into sugars.
What is a nutrient?
A chemical that an organism needs to live and grow, used in its metabolism which must be taken from its environment.
What is an essential Nutrient?
A nutrient required for normal body function that cannot be synthesized by the body.
What is a non-essential nutrient?
Nutrients that can be made by the body
How many amino acids are essential?
9, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylanine, threonine,
tryptophan, valine, histidine.
How many amino acids are non-essential?
12, Alanine, Arginine, aspartate, cysteine, glutamate, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine, tyrosine, asparagine, selenocysteine.

Note: It is hard for vegetarians to get all of their essential amino acids.
What is it called when the stomach moves all of the food down through the gut?
Peristalsis
Where is the appendix?
Connects to the cecum which is located near the junction of the small intestine and the large intestine.
What is the BMI (Body Mass Index)?
Provides an indicator of body fatness, which is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
How many calories do you get from fat?
9 calories per gram
How many calories do you get from sugar?
4 calories per gram.
How many calories do you get from protein?
4 calories per gram.
What are bones made of (main Minerals)?
calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, silica, iron,
zinc, selenium, boron, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium.
What are foods high in sulfur good for?
Detoxification of the liver

Ex: eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli
