What is matter? |
Matter is any substance that has mass and occupies space |
What are the three states of matter? |
Solid, liquid and gas |
State the properties of a solid |
The particles in a solid are closely packed in a regular way, it has a strong force of attraction, has low kinetic energy, difficult to compress, has a definite shape and a definite volume |
State the properties of a liquid |
There are small spaces between liquid particles, has a moderate force of attraction, medium kinetic energy so particles move slowly, slightly compressed, has a definite shape and takes the shape of its container and has a definite volume. |
State the properties of a gas |
Its particles are far apartand randomly arranged, has a weak force of attraction, has high kinetic energy so particles move rapidly, easily compressed, has a variable shape and volume |
What is osmosis? |
The movement of water molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane |
What is the particulate theory of matter? |
-All matter is made up of prticles -The particles are in constant motion -There are spaces between the particles -There are forces of attraction and repulsion between the particles |
What is diffusion? |
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until evenly distributed |
