Check medication again (it is a double check medication to verify with another nurse); Inject air into N or Cloudy first then into R or Clear; Draw from R or Clear first then from N or Cloudy in the same syringe; careful not to touch needle tip to medication.

Position Client for appropriate SQ site (abdomen prefered); Outer posterior of upper arm, anterior aspect of thigh, abdomen, scapular area of upper back, and upper ventrogluteal, dorsogluteal areas.

Assess site for: REEDA, Tenderness, bruising, previous injections, do not give near incisions.

Clean area with alcohol, clean in circular motion, inner to outer. Allow skin to dry, do not fan dry.

Pinch up skin, using fingers, avoid touching the site; hold syringe with firm grip; explain to the pt. they will feel a sensation of a prick followed by a burning sensation as the medication is being injected.

Insert needle at a 45-90 degree angle with a steady motion; If at 45 degrees the bevel of the needle must be up; DON'T ASPIRATE.

Once injected, remove needle, apply only pressure.

Dispose of UNCAPPED needle and syringe in the sharps container; make pt. comfortable, and secure with bedrails.
