Amino acids

Compounds made up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur

Peptide bonds

Aka end bonds, are chemical bonds that join amino acids together, end to end in long chains, to form a polypeptide chain

Keratin protein

Long, coiled polypeptide chains

Side bonds

Disulfide, salt, and hydrogen bonds that cross link polypeptide chains together

Permanent waving

2 steps process 1. Physical change caused by wrapping the hair on perm robs. 2. Chemical change caused by application of waving solution and neutralizer.

Thioglycolic acid

Common reducing agent in permanent wave solutions.

Ammonium thioglycolate (ATG)

Alkaline, active ingredient, or reducing agent in alkaline permanents.

Alkaline waves (cold waves)

pH 9.0 to 9.6. Ammonium thioglycolat. Room temperature.

Acids waves

Glycerol monothioglycolate (GMTG). low pH, most contain ATG.

True acid waves

3 components: permanent waving solution, activator, neutralizer. PH 4.5 to 7.0, require heat to process

Acid-balanced waves

Ph 7.8 to 8.2. Room temperature.
