God gave us a natural ability to differentiate between Good and bad. Unlike Augustine, believed it to be a "rational power". Allowed for human reasoning. Mistakes can be made on path between conscientia and synderisis or incorrect use of synderisis.

Joseph Butler

Conscience is "our natural guide". Manifests itself thorugh feelings of guilt. "Magisterially exerts itself without being consulted".


Butler believes conscience is FLAWLESS, people do bad only when they actively ignore the conscince, a worse sin that the one which they go on to committ.

Newman

Conscience is a "messenger from God". He, like Augustine, belives it whispers in our ear.

Fromm

Initially very pessemistic : Authoritarian Conscience - just a was of establishment controlling us. Instill us with feelings of guilt when we do not follow orders.




Later more hopeful : Humanistic Conscience - concience asses our success and leads us to realising our full potential.
