What is blood?
Description, Location & Function |
Description: Blood plasma and formed elements: Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets.
Location: Within blood vessels, within chambers of heart. Function: Transport of nutrients, blood gasses, wastes, Attack pathogens and other substances that invade the body. |
Areolar Loose Connective Tissue
Description: Consists of fibers (collagen, elastic and reticular) arranged randomly and several kinds of cells ( fibroblasts, macrophages, plasma cells, adipocytes, mast cells and few white blood cells.
Location: Beneath all epithelial tissues. Function: Binds epithelium to underlying tissues and allows nutrients to diffuse to epithelial cells. |
Reticular Loose Connective Tissue
Description: Fine interlacing network of reticular fibers.
Location: Liver, spleen, lymph nodes Function: Forms support (framework) of these soft organs. |
Adipose Loose Connective Tissue
Description: Has cells derived from fibroblasts (called adipocytes) that are specialized for storage of triglycerides.
Location: Under skin and surrounding organs. Function: Store lipids for fuel and thermal insulation; cushioning organs. |
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
Description: Shiny white extracellular matrix
Location: Forms ligaments, connects bone to bone, tendons (connects muscle to bone) Function: Resist pulling forces at attachment points. |
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
Description:Collagen fibers; usually arranged irregularly with few fibroblasts
Location: Skin Function: Resists pulling forces from many different directions that would tear skin when skin is stretched |
Elastic Connective Tissue
Description: Predominantly elastic fibers with fibroblasts between fibers.
Location: Lungs, trachea, and bronchi Function:Allows respiratory organs to recoil after inhalation. |
Hyaline Cartilage
Description: contains a resilient gel as ground substance and appears in the body as a bluish-white
Location: Ends of long bones, Trachea and bronchi, Embryonic skeleton Function: Smooth surface that is resilient and reduces friction at joint. |
Fibrocartilage
Description: Visible think bundles of collagen fibers within extracellular matrix
Location: Intervertebral discs, Pubic symphysis Function: Provide strength to discs that form joints between vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. Forms strong, flexible joint between hip bones |
Elastic Cartilage
Description: Chondrocytes in threadlike network of elastic fibers with extracellular matrix.
Location: External ear, Auditory tube and Epiglottis of larynx. Function: provides support and maintains shape of external ear, Provides support and elasticity to auditory tubes |
Compact Bone
Location: Exterior of bones
Function: Support, protection, storage of minerals |
Spongy Bone
Location: Interior of bones
Function: Support, protection, storage of minerals |
