What is Areolar (loose) connective tissue?
Matrix with collagen and elastic fibers; cells are fibroblasts, macrophages, and mast cells.
Subcutaneous layer of skin, around blood vessels and nerves
Connects skin to muscles, cushions organs, etc.
What is Adipose Tissue?
Composed of ring-shaped fat cells with nuclei near the edge of the ring; center of cell filled with lipid.

Subcutaneous layer of skin, surrounding organs.
Reserve food fuel, support, insulation.

What is Dense connective tissue?
Parallel collagen fibers with fibroblast cells
Tendons and most ligaments
Attach muscle to bone, or bone to bone.
What is Dense irregular connective tissue?
Irregularly arranged collagen fibres with fibroblast cells.
Dermis of skin, fibrous capsule of organs and joints
Provides support and structural strength.
What is Reticular Connective Tissue?
Reticular fibers in a loose ground substance
Lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow>
Support
What is Hyaline Cartilage?

Costal cartilage, ends of long bones, nasal septum, trachea
Support, resists compressive stress.
What is Elastic Cartilage?
External ear, epiglottis, eustachian tubes
Supports with greater flexibility
What is Fibrocartilage?

Intervertebral disc, pubic symphysis
Tensile strength, absorb shock
What is Bone?
Solid matrix with collagen fibers and inorganic salts; osteocytes in lacunae arranged in Haversian systems.

Supports, protects, provide lever for muscles in locomotion.
What is Blood?
Cells in a fluid matrix (plasma).

Transport of nutrients, wastes, and respiratory gases.
