Active Transport

the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy

Amphipathic
of a molecule, especially a protein) having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts.
Apoptosis

the death of cells that occurs as a normal and controlled part of an organism's growth or development
Aquaporin
integral membrane proteins from a larger family of major intrinsic proteins (MIP) that form pores in the membrane of biological cells.
Axon

the long threadlike part of a nerve cell along which impulses are conducted from the cell body to other cells

Carrier Protein

integral/intrinsic membrane proteins; that is they exist within and span the membrane across which they transport substances. The proteins may assist in the movement of substances by facilitated diffusion or active transport.

Cell Wall

a rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria. In the algae and higher plants, it consists mainly of cellulose.
Centrioles

a minute cylindrical organelle near the nucleus in animal cells, occurring in pairs and involved in the development of spindle fibers in cell division
Channel Protein

a protein that allows the transport of specific substances across a cell membrane

Chloroplasts

(in green plant cells) a plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place

Concentration Gradient
the process of particles, which are sometimes called solutes, moving through a solution or gas from an area with a higher number of particles to an area with a lower number of particles. The areas are typically separated by a membrane.

Cytoplasm
the material or protoplasm within a living cell, excluding the nucleus
