Checks on the system

crankcase oil

Compressor is set to auto

Drain recievers of oil and water.

Test efficiency of compressor by draining the air from recievers until compressor starts up and refills.

Listen and feel for air leaks.

Why do you drain the air recievers

To prevent starting air explosions

What is the cause of a start air explosion

Oil from the compressor to the starting airline deposits an oil film in the pipes.

The starting air valve is leaki g or jammed open.

Hot gas may enter the starting air manifold + vapourises the oil causing a fire.

High pressure + compressed air in contact with the fire may cause an explosion.

What are the safety devices fitted on a start air line

Flame trap:

Prevents flames emitting.

Fusible plug:

Releases air pressure when the air temperature from the compressor is high....above 105°C.

Relief valve:

Opens at 10% of thr working pressure.

Busting discs:

Rupture when it reaches over pressure of the working pressure.

Prevents start air explosions.
