i.e. "Get Lost," or "Shut up!"
Institutional Facts
are the meanings of brute facts based on interpretation.
3 Principles of Verbal Communication....(of symbols)
1. Interpretation creates meaning
2. Communication is guided by rules
3. Punctuation affects meaning
Communication Rules
are shared understandings among members of a particular culture or social group, about what communication means & what behaviors are appropriate in various situations.
i.e. taught @ a young age, "please & thank you"
Regulative Rules
regulate interaction by specifying when, how, where, and with whom to communicate about certain things.
i.e. rules vary across culture, appropriate in 1 society, but NOT the other.
Constitutive Rules
define what a particular communication means or stands for.
i.e. we learn how to show respect, professionalism & rudeness.
Totalizing
is responding to a person as if one label totally represents that person.
(occurs when we dismiss people by saying, "she's odd," "He's a jock")
Loaded Language
are words that slant perceptions, and thus meanings, exceedingly.
i.e. the "pigs" aka the police
Static Evaluation
is an assessment that suggests that something is unchanging. It just, IS...
i.e. the word IS. Ann is selfish, Sarah is rude.
3 Characteristics of Comm:
1. Arbitrariness (arbitrary)
2. Ambiguous (ambiguity)
3. Abstraction (abstract)
Arbitrary
means that the verbal symbols are not intrinsically connected to what they represent.
i.e. apple
Ambiguous
means it doesn't have a clear-cut, precise meaning. Meanings (of words) vary from culture and individuals. i.e. Japanese man.
i.e. dog.
CAN lead to misunderstandings
Abstract
means that the words are not the concrete or tangible phenomena to which they refer.
i.e. NOT crystal clear
