1763- The Proclamation of 1763

signed by King George (a maniac), prohibited any English settlement west of the Appalachian Mts. Didn't want citizens exposed to Indian attacks. Also to calm the Indians from the thought that settlers were going to push them off of their land. Indians were now under the protection of the King.

1764- Sugar Act

Offset the war debt from the French and Indian War. Taxed sugar, textiles, coffee, wine, indigo, fabrics, and doubled taxes on foreign goods reshipped from England. Forbids the import of foreign run or French wine.

1764- Currency Act

Prohibits colonists from issuing paper money. Threatened to destabilize the economy.

1765- Stamp Act

1st direct Act on American colonies. To "provide" for the military. 1st time in 150 years that Americans will pay taxes directly to England. Americans united because of this and were furious.

1765- Quartering Act

house British troops and feed them

July 1765-

Sons of Liberty form underground organization apposed to the Acts violence and intimidation. British Stamp Act agents resign. Stopped merchants from ordering British goods.

1766

King George repeals the Stamp Act.

1766 Declaratory Act

declaration by the British parliament that accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act, it stated that the British parliament's taxing authority was the same in America as in Great Britain.

June 1767- Townshend Revenue Acts

to offset military and administering to colonies. Taxes on paper, tea, glass, lead, and paint. Establishes colonial board of customs commission in Boston.

February 1768

Samuel Adams writes circular letter that apposes taxation without representation and colonists unite against British government.

August 1768-

Boston and New York boycott all English goods.

July 1769-

boycott of English goods moves to other states

March 5th, 1770

Boston Massacre: 3 dead, 2 mortally injured, and 6 injured.

June 1772

Gaspee runs around in Narragansett Bay

May 10, 1773- Tea Act

3 cents per lb. on tea arriving into colonies. Gave British a monopoly on tea.

November 1773

British send 3 ships over with tea. Americans send ships back with tea without paying taxes.

December 16, 1773

8,000 Bostonians gather to listen to Adams repeat Hutchison's orders. That night they were going to disguise themselves as Mohawk indians and dump the tea into the harbor.

March 1774- Intolerable Acts

Retaliation for the Boston Tea Party results in Parliament passing the Intolerable Acts.

Boston Port Bill

shuts down Boston ports until taxes were paid.

May 20, 1774- Massachusetts Regulating Act and Government Act

ends any self-rule by colonists

Quebec Act-

established centralized government in Canada controlled by King/Parliament.

September 5th- October 26th 1774

1st Continental Congress meets in Philadelphia, 56 delegates represent everyone but Georgia.

March 30, 1775- Restraining Act

King George hopes to keep the colonies dependent on him, by allowing them only to trade with Great Britain. Also bans fishing in the North Atlantic.

April 18 1775

King George orders 700 British soldiers to destroy colonists weapon depot. Paul Revere warns colonists Lexington at Midnight.

April 19, 1775

700 British men were sent to destroy the weapon depot, but thanks to Paul Revere we were prepared. This shot starts the Revolutionary War

July 5, 1775

Olive Branch Petition signed and sent to King George, a peace offering, and is turned down.

June 17, 1775- Battle of Bunker Hill

The British win but suffer more casualties than Americans.

May 3, 1775

Second Continental Congress meets to write up a document that declares colonists free from England. Declaration of Independence.

1783 and 1784

Massachusetts abolished slave trade- 1783, rest of the colonies abolished slave trade by 1784.

Christmas Night: December 25, 1776

Washington crossed the Delaware to surprise the Hessians. 2,400 Patriots defeated the 1,500 Hessians. Won the battle in less than an hour.

January 3, 1777

Patriots marched to Princeton and defeated the British at Battle of Princeton
