Why did the Cold War start?
The cold war started because of political and economic differences between the Soviet Union (totalitarian and communist) and the United States (democracy and capitalism). The USSR had troops in Eastern Europe after WWII and did not allow free elections.
Why was it a "cold war" with no direct conflict between the USSR and the US?
It remained a cold war because both powers were too scared to use nuclear weapons due to their destruction capabilities.
Winston Churchill’s “Iron Curtain” speech
Described the symbolic division in Europe between democratic nations & communist nations - "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent."
United Nations? How is it different from the League of Nations?
The UN was created after WWII to keep peace. The UN has military power and the US and Japan are members, whereas League of Nations did not have military force or the presence of major countries like the US.
What were the political ideologies that were fighting during the Cold war?
Totalitarian Dictatorship(USSR) vs. democracy (US).
What two economic ideologies were at war during the Cold War?
Communism/ command economy(USSR) vs. Capitalism/ free-market economy (US).
Satellite Nations
Countries in Eastern Europe that were controlled by communist governments loyal to the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Examples - Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary,Bulgaria.

The Korean War

US got involved when communism North Korea invaded South Korea –wanted to keep communism from spreading (containment). US was able to keep Korea divided (38th parallel) and keep South Korea free of communism.

The Vietnam War

The US got involved in Vietnam to keep communism from spreading from the north to the south. Once the US left (Vietnamization) , the whole country fell to communism, making Vietnam united but communist.
Soviet Union invasion of Afghanistan

Soviets invaded Afghanistan to protect the communist government there.
