Mesenchyme (Embryonic)
Gives rise to all other connective tissues; consists of connective tissue cells (mesenchymal cells) in a semi-fluid ground substance containing reticular fibres.
Loose (Areolar)
Three types of fibres present randomly e.g. subcutaneous layer- strength, elasticity, support.

(Many cells, fewer fibres)
Loose (Adipose-lots of fat cells)
Loose (Adipose-lots of fat cells)
Adipocytes are dominant; found in association with areolar connective tissue (Insulation, energy source).
Dense (Regular)
Regularly arranged collagen, e.g; tendons (pulling along the fibre axis). Attachment.

(More fibres, fewer cells)
Cartilage (Hyaline- glassy, smooth)
Relatively weak, resilient gel in which collagen fibres are not obvious. Abundant, e.g; anterior ends of ribs. Flexibility and movement.

(Dense network of collagen and elastic fibres)
Bone (Compact)
Contains osteons (Haversian systems) consisting of mineral salts (hardness) and collagen (strength). Protection and support.
Liquid (Blood)
Consists of blood plasma and formed elements (red cells, white cells, platelets).
