Why was America a nation divided?

In 1861 the civil war broke out dividing the nation. One of the primary causes for this was the Souths want to secede (become a separate country) so that it could continue slavery.


In 1865 Congress created the 13th Amendment that abolished slavery.

What was the KKK?

The Ku Klux Klan was a white supremacist group that aimed to maintain white power and enforce segregation by attacking (for example) black schools, churches and politicians. By 1871 it's membership grew rapidly to 500,000.

What are the three Branches of the US political system and what do they do?

Executive = President, runs country, recommends legislation.


Congress = Legislature, US parliament, House of Reps and Senate, bills can become acts.
Judiciary = Supreme Court, highest court in US, can appeal rulings and their rulings are final.

15th Amendment.

Gave all male citizens the right to vote regardless of their race.

Formally abolished slavery throughout the U.S.

14th Amendment.

Extended citizenship to everyone US born including ex-slaves.

Republican Party

Traditionally based in the North
Favored less Federal Government in peoples lives.
Likes things to stay the same.
Founded by anti-slavery activists.
Free Market capitalism.

Democratic Party

Historically the party of the South and the large industrial cities of the North.
Voters of the Dems were usually working class and they supported pro-segregationists (same v.versa)
Believe in a Pro mixed economy.
Like things to change.

Plessy V Ferguson

1896
Homer Plessy sat in a whites-only carriage on a train, he was arrested.
He appealed his conviction and the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was legal as long as there were separate but equal facilities for each race.

W.E.Dubois

Leading civil rights activist.
Thought black people needed to unite into a single organisation and campaign peacefully.
Founded the NAACP in 1909.
