Atria

Upper chambers of heart; receive blood into heart

Ventricles

Lower chambers of the heart; pump blood out of the heart

Atrioventricular valves

Between the atria and the ventricles

Semilunar valves

Between the ventricles and the arteries that bring blood away from the heart

Chordae Tendonae

Tendons that hold onto the bottom of the atrioventricular valves preventing them from inverting upward when the ventricles contract

Right atrium

receives deoxygenated blood from the superior/inferior vena cava; pumps blood downward to the right ventricle

Right ventricle

receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium; pumps blood out of heart to pulmonary circuit

Left atrium

receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins; pumps blood downward to the left ventricle

Left ventricle

receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium; pumps blood out of the heart to the systemic circuit

Tricuspid

the atrioventricular valve that is between the RA and RV

Bicuspid/Mitral

the atrioventricular valve that is between the LA and LV

Pulmonary semilunar valve

the semilunar valve between the RV and the pulmonary trunk

Aortic semilunar valve

the semilunar valve between the LV and the aorta

Septum

The wall that separates the right and left sides of the heart

Sinoatrial node

A node which initiates the heartbeat; known as the pacemaker; initiates contraction of the atria

Atrioventricular node

A node which initiates the contraction of the ventricles

Purkinje fibres

Spread the nervous signal throughout the muscle of the ventricles

Pericardium

A sac that encloses the heart with fluid that sits between the sac walls and the heart walls

Coronary artery

branches off the aorta as it leaves the heart; serves to nourish the muscle tissue of the heart
