What does the circulatory system include? |
The heart and blood vessels, which form a closed circuit |
What are the chambers of the heart, and their functions? |
The left and right ventricles: propels blood out of the heart The left and right atria: collects returned blood |
Blood is pumped out of the ventricles through ____, into a distribution network of ______. |
Arteries; Capillaries |
Blood returns to the atria by the ____? |
Veins |
What are the circuits in the circulatory system? |
Systemic circulation, and pulmonary circulation |
What occurs in systemic circulation? |
Blood from the left ventricle is distributed throughout the body, to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the entire body, and returns to the right atrium. |
What occurs during pulmonary circulation? |
Blood returned to the right atrium is depleted of oxygen, and loaded with Carbon Dioxide. This blood then flows into the right ventricle, where it is pumped into the capillary network in the lungs. After exchanging carbon dioxide for new oxygen, blood is returned to the left atrium. From the left atrium, blood flows to the left ventricle. |
From where are the major arteries of systemic circulation derived? What are they? |
Derived from the aorta; They include, the carotid arteries for the head and neck, the axillary arteries for the upper limbs, and the iliac arteries for the pelvis and lower limbs |
List the 2 main systemic veins and from where blood is returned. |
Superior vena cava: returns blood from the head and upper limbs Inferior vena cava: returns blood from the lower limbs |
What is the largest artery? What is its function? |
The aorta; Channels blood from the heart to other arteries, and then to the body's organs, and other structures |
What is the largest artery? What is its function? |
The aorta; Channels blood from the heart to other arteries, and then to the body's organs, and other structures |
What are the coronary arteries? |
2 small branches of the aorta that supply blood directly to the heart itself |
What is the largest artery? What is its function? |
The aorta; Channels blood from the heart to other arteries, and then to the body's organs, and other structures |
What are the coronary arteries? |
2 small branches of the aorta that supply blood directly to the heart itself |
What supplies both sides of the head and neck with blood? |
The carotid arteries |
Where do the right and left subclavian arteries supple blood to? |
The shoulders and upper limbs |
What happens to the aorta in the abdomen? |
It divides into 2 large branches- the left and right iliac |
Where does the iliac artery supply blood to? |
Pelvic region |
What happens to the iliac arteries as they reach the lower limbs? |
They become the femoral arteries |
What are arteries? |
Flexible thick walled tubes that carry blood away from the heart to the rest of the body |
What are the 2 largest veins in the body? |
The superior and inferior vena cavae- which drain into the heart from above and below respectively |
What drains the upper limbs? Where do they drain to? |
The basilica, brachial, and cephalic veins; Drain into the axillary artery |
What drains the head and brain? |
The internal jugular vein |
What drains the head and brain? |
The internal jugular vein |
What forms the brachiocephalic vein? |
The internal jugular vein, and the subclavian vein |
What forms the superior vena cava? |
The left and right brachiocephalic veins |
What drains the thoracic cavity? |
The azygos vein |
Where does the azygos vein join the superior vena cava? |
Just before it enters the heart |
What forms the inferior vena cava? |
The 2 iliac veins |
What are veins? |
Thin walled, low pressure blood vessels that return blood to the heart, many (but not all) Bain's have one way valves |
