Define Solid |
A Solid has a definite shape and volume. |
Define Liquid |
Liquids have a definite volume, not shape. They take the shape of the container and can be poured. |
Define Gas |
A gas has no definite volume or shape. They fill all the space available. |
Define Boiling |
Boiling occurs at a specific temperature (the boiling point) and takes place throughout the liquid. |
Define Evaporation |
Evaporation occurs over a range of temperatures (above the melting point, below the boiling point). It takes place on the surface of the liquid. The rate or speed of the evaporation increases as the temperature increases. |
Define Sublimation |
This is when a solid turns into a gas, without showing any signs of a liquid state. |
Examples: what happens to white solid Ammonium Chloride? |
It changes to a colourless gas, then returns to the white solid. |
Examples : what happens to Black Solid Iodine? |
It forms a purple gas, then returns to the black solid. |
Define Diffusion |
Diffusion is how particles move and mix by themselves without being stirred or shaken. |
