Dalton's Atomic Theory

Dalton's Atomic theory may be summarised as follows:

-all matter is made up of very small solid particles called atoms

-all atoms are indivisible

Cathode Rays

Cathode rays are streams of negatively charged particles called electrons. They travel in straight lines from the cathode to the anode, are deflected by electric and magnetic fields, and have sufficient energy to move a small object such as a paddle wheel.

Alpha Particles

Alpha particles are positively charged and consist of groups of two neutrons and two protons stuck together.

Diffusion

Diffusion is the spreading of particles.

John Dalton

John Dalton said that all matter is made up of very small solid particles, and all atoms are indivisible.

William Crookes

William Crookes investigated cathode rays in vacuum tubes.

George Stoney

George Stoney proposed the name electron to describe the particles in electricity.

J.J. Thompson

J.J. Thompson showed that electrons are negatively charged, and measured the e/m of the electron.

Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford and his co-workers discovered the nucleus of the atom and the existence of protons in the nucleus.

James Chadwick

James Chadwick discovered the neutron.

Element

An element is a substance that cannot be split into simpler substances by chemical means.

Triad

A triad is a group of 3 elements with similar chemical properties in which the atomic weight of the middle element is approximately equal to the average of the other two.

Newland's Octaves

Newland's Octaves are arrangements of elements by increasing atomic weight in which the first and the eighth element, counting from a particular element, have similar properties.

Mendeleev's Periodic Law

Mendeleev's Periodic Law states that when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic weight, the properties of the elements recur periodically.

Atomic Number

The atomic number (z number) of an atom is the number of protons in the nucleus of that atoms.
