What is the site of reactivity of an organic molecule called ?
Its functional group.
What is the hybridisation of oxygen in an alcohol ?
sp3.
True or false: Cholesterol is an alcohol.
True.
What is the difference between a primary, secondary and tertiary alcohol ?
A primary alcohol is when the hydroxile group is bonded to a carbon atom that is bonded to two other hydrogen atoms. A seconday alcohol is when the hydroxile group is bonded to a carbon atom that is bonded to one other hydrogen.
Explain what allows alcohols to be water soluble and why they have such high boiling and melting points ?
The highly electronegative polar bond between oxygen and hydrogen allow the strong intermolecular force called hydrogen bonds to form between the molecules of the alcohol. This is responsible for its high melting and boiling points. The fact that it is water soluble is because it is consequently a polar molecule.
What is the trend for alcohol chain length and solubility in water ?
The longer the chain, the less soluble it becomes in water.
What is the general formula of an alcohol ?
R-OH.
What is the general formula of an ether ?
R-O-R'.
What is the general formula for haloalkanes ?
R-X.
What is formed when sodium reacts with alcohol ?
Alkoxides and hydrogen gas.
