Alkaline

having a pH greater than 7

Base Section

Subsections located with a larger panel section ; hair is divided into smaller subsections where one perm rod fits each.

Porosity

The ability of hair to absorb liquid

Sodium

A highly soluble chemical element that is an alkaline substance used in the manufacturing of permanent wave lotions and chemical hair relaxers.

Straight Rods

A perm rod that has an even diameter/ width throughout the entire rod length

Piggy back

Aka DOUBLE WRAP; wrap technique where hair longer than 10-12 inches is wrapped on one rod from the mods haft and the remaining hair is wrapped around a 2nd rod.

Test Curl

Determines the required processing time and ensures that the desire curl has been achieved for permanent wave service

Weave

Wrapping consisting of controlled sections of hair that replaces straight parting with zig zags.

Curvature

Consists of parting that follow the shape of your guests head

Bender

Flexible rods; foam covered perm rods that are easily bent into different shapes and used for permanent waving

Processing Strand Test

Periodic strand test; performed during a chemical Relaxer to determine if the hair has been sufficiently relaxed

True Acid Waves

Permanent waves processed with the application of heat that have pH range between 4.5 to 7, main ingredient is typically glyceryl monothioglycolate (GMTG) these acid waves process slower than alkaline waves

Occupational disease

Any illness caused by over exposure to certain products or ingredients

New Growth

The new hair growing out from the scalp that has not yet been chemically altered

Ammonium Bisulfite

Mild, alternative relaxer containing a low pH compatible with this relaxers

Permanent waving

Chemically rearranging straight hair into an airy or wavy form

Potassium hydroxide

Aka lithium hydroxide ; alkaline ingredient used in chemical relaxers;typically marketed as no-mix, no-lye

Thio neutralization

Process of stopping a permanent wave and reforming the hair into new curly shape

Protective Cream

Cream barrier applied around the hairline and ears to protect the skin from permanent wave lotions or hair color

Release Statement

Form affirming that your guest was advised of the potential risk the could result during the requested chemical service

Bookend

Requires only one paper ,which is foxed in half like a book

Spiral Curls

Consists of wrapping the hair at an angle other than parallel to the length of the rod which will create a coiling effect of the hair

Bricklay

Perm rods are placed within a staggered pattern of subsections

End Papers (End Wraps)

Absorbent pieces if thin tissue - type paper that control and protect the hair ends or any texturized lengths of hair within a subsection

Formaldehyde

An organic compound that is colorless, flammable and pungent gas; present in air and many food and beauty products

Exothermic

Processed by chemical reaction that releases heat; self heating

Endothermic

Processed by the application of heat; hood dryer, heat processor

Potential hydrogen

A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution

Normalizing lotions

Solutions with an acidic pH that restore the hair's natural pH after a hydroxide relaxer

Keratin

A strong fibrous protein; The building block for hair, skin and nails

Elasticity

The capability of the hair strand to stretch and return to its previous form without breaking; Elasticity is directly related to the condition of the hair

Croquignole

Wrapping the hair from ends to scalp in overlapping concentric layers

Neutralizer

Chemical solution that stops the waving process of a permanent wave; rebuilds the bonds into their new form

Base Direction

The position of the perm rod horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, within a section and/or parting

Trichology

Technical term for the study of hair

Formaldehyde Free

Products are manufactured without the use of formaldehyde but could omit a formaldehyde gas upon use

Double Flat Wrap

Requires hair to be placed between two end papers, on each side of the hair strand

Neutralizing (rebuilding)

Chemically restoring disulfide bonds to harden into a new shape

Soft Curl Reformation

A chemical texture service that restructures overly curly hair into loose curls or waves
