C2 state symbol definition; |
• state symbols tell you the physical state of the reactants and products |
C2 aqueous definition; |
• aqueous means dissolved in water |
C2 different physical states that reactants and products can be in; |
• [s] solid • [l] liquid • [g] gas • [aq] aqueous |
C2 the elements in group one; |
• lithium • sodium • potassium • rubidium • caesium • francium |
C2 group one [alkali metals] description; |
• alkali metals all have one electron in their outer shell giving them similar properties & making them very reactive • alkali metals are all very soft & have low densities • lithium, sodium & potassium are less dense than water |
C2 trends as you go down group one; |
• increasing reactivity • lower melting & boiling points • higher relative atomic mass • higher density • decreasing hardness |
C2 why melting & boiling points decrease down group one; |
• one; group one [alkali metals] form regular structures held together with metallic bonds [outer electron is delocalised] & there are strong forces of attraction between these electrons and the positively charged nuclei • two; as you go down group one, the atoms increase in size meaning the attractions become weaker as the nucleus is further from the free electrons • three; less energy is needed to break the metallic bonds so melting & boiling points decrease down the group |
