How do organizations gain a competitive advangatage using IS inside the organization?
they determine a competitive strategy and design value chaines to achieve the strategy
What are the three fundamental types of IS within Organizatons
1. Calculation Systems
2. Functional Systems
3. Integrated, Cross-Functinal Systems
Calculation Systems
-very first information systems
-purpose is to relieve workers of tedious, repetitive human calculations

ex. payroll, general ledger, and inventory
Functional systems
-second era facilitated the work of a single department or function
-sometimes called islands of automation becuase they work independently of one another
Integrated Cross Functional Systems
systems were designed not to facilitate the work of a single department or function, but rather to integrate the activities in an entrie business process.
-sometimes called process-based systems becuase they support complete business processes
How do functional systems relate to the value chain?
they are supported first by the humans that perform work in the primary activities, and the human resources with primary activities are supposted, in turn, by accouting and other infrastructure
what are the basic types of functional systems?
1. marketing and sales systems
2. operations
3. manufacturing
4. human resources
5. accounting and finance
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002
revision of Exchange Act of 1934, enacted to prevent corporate fraud.
What are the problem of functional systems?
limitied becuase they work in isolation
-lack of data integrity
how do the cross-functional systems relate to the value chane?
-designed to overcome problems in functional systems
-it intergrates primary value chain activities with human resources and accounting
primary activities
relate directly to the organization's customers and products

ex. in bound logistics/ operations or manufacturing/out bound logistics/service and support/marketing and sales
support activities
facilitated by human resource, accounting, and infrastructure, procurement, and technology activities
push production planning
organization creates a production plan or schedule and pushes goods through manufacturing and sales
pull production planning
responds to customer demand`
radio-frequency identification tags
a computer chip that transmits data about the container, product, or equipment to which it is attatched
