Lipid Bilayer

Structural basis of all cell membranes; mostly phospholipids

Fluid Mosaic Model

A cell membrane has a mixed composition of lipids, proteins, and the interactions that are fluid

Transport protein

Membrane protein that passively or actively assists specific ions or molecules into or out of the cell

Receptor protein

Binds extra cellular substances that can trigger change in cell activities

Concentration gradient

Difference in the number of molecules or ions of any substance between two regions

Diffusion

Random movement of molecules from great to least concentration

Selective permeability

Built-in capacity of a cell membrane to prevent or allow specific substances from crossing it at certain times in certain amounts

Active transport

Pumping a specific solute across a cell membrane against its concentration gradient through the interior of a transport protein

Passive transport

Diffusion of a solute across a cell membrane, through the interior of a transport protein

Calcium pump

Active transport protein; pumps calcium ions across a cell membrane against their concentration gradient

Osmosis

Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from a region where the water concentration is high to a region that is low

Hypotonic solution

Lower solute concentration

Hypertonic solution

Higher solute concentration

Isotonic solution

Equal solute concentration

Endocytosis

Small patch of plasma membrane sinks inward and seals back on itself, forming a vesicle

Exocytosis

A cytoplasmic vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane and contents are released outside the cell

What causes cystic fibrosis?

A mutation of the CFTR gene

What does the reaction of phospholipids form?

Lipid bilayer

What is the order of parts?

Hydrophilic and then Hydrophobic parts

Why are membranes fairly impermeable?

Cholesterol strengthens the plasma membrane

Describe the plasma membrane surface.

Lipid Bilayer, mixed composition of phospholipids, glycolipids, sterols, and proteins
