Accredation

Of an OT educational program. The minimal educational standards recommended by the profession have been met and the school has received formal approval by ACOTE

Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)

Regulates entry-level education for both OT and OTA programs in the U.S., standards are reviewed and revised every 5 years

Certification

Refers to the acknowledgement that an individual has the qualifications to be an entry-level practitioner, either a registered occupational therapist or certified occupational therapy assistant

Doctor of Occupational Therapy

A clinical or practice-based doctorate, also known as a professional doctorate

Fieldwork

Each level of training requires practical experience referred to as fieldwork, purpose of fieldwork is to provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom to practice in the clinical setting

Level I Fieldwork

Initial level, completed concurrently with the academic coursework, purpose is to introduce the student to the profession and to the various applications of intervention

Level II Fieldwork

Experiences designed to provide students with supervised, hands-on clinical training, students are immersed in OT practice and by the end are expected to be functioning as entry-level practitioners

National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBSCOT)

After completing the educational requirements and fieldwork, candidates at each educational level are eligible to sit for the national certification examination, a 4 hours multiple choice exam

Certified Occupational Therapy Aide (COTA)

Does not receive specialized training before working in the field

Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR)

Individuals who were qualified with complete and approved professional training and 1 year of subsequent work experience
