Matter
Anything that occupies space
Chemistry
The scientific study of matter and the physical and chemical changes of matter.
Solids
Matter with definite weight, volume and shape
Liquids
Matter with definite weight and volume but no definite shape.
Gases
Matter with definite weight but indefinite volume and shape.
Physical change
A change in the physical characteristics of a substance without creating a new substance
Chemical change
A change in a substance that creates a new substance with chemical characteristics different from those of the original substance
Organic chemistry
Deals with all matter that is now living or was alive at one time, with carbon present
Plants and animals
Inorganic chemistry
Studies all matter that is not alive, has never been alive and does not contain carbon.
Water and rocks
Elements
Basic substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Atom
Smallest complete unit of an element
Molecule
Two or more atoms joined together by a chemical bond
Chemical bond
Bond involving the sharing of electrons of two or more atoms
Compound
Molecule formed when two or more different atoms are joined chemically
Amino acids
Compounds consisting of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen joining together to create protein
Keratin
The primary protein hair is made of 97%
Peptide bonds
The backbone of protein molecule. Formed when two amino acids join together. Broken by alkaline chemicals and heat
Hydrogen bond
Opposites attract. When one hydrogen atom is attracted to another negative atom. Very weak and broken by heat and water. Organize the protein chain in hair to give shape. 35% of the hairs strength.
Salt bond
The negative charge in one amino acid attracts a positive charge in another amino acid. Also organize protein chains. Not strong. Weakened by water.
Disulfide bond
Sulfer type bonds joining other Sulfer bonds. A chemical bond that forms between protein structures. Breaking creates lasting effects.
