Consciousness

Awareness of everything that is going on around you and inside your own head at any given moment

Waking consciousness

State where thoughts, feelings, and sensations are clear and organized, and they feel awake

Altered state of consciousness

Shift I'm quality or pattern of your mental activity. Thoughts may become fuzzy and disorganized and you may feel less alert, or your thoughts may take bizarre turns, as they often do in dreams.

Circadian Rhythm

Cycle that takes "about a day" to complete.

Sleep-wake cycle

SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus)

Structure deep within the hypothalamus that influences release of melatonin. The internal clock telling people when to wake up and fall asleep.

Microsleeps

Brief side steps into sleep lasting only seconds.

Sleep deprivation

Loss of sleep. Disrupts normal Sleep-wake cycle.

Adaptive theory of sleep

Animals and humans evolved different sleep patterns to avoid predators during the predator's normal hunting times, which are generally at night.

Restorative theory

Sleep is necessary to the physical health of the body. Chemical that were used up during the days activities are replenished and cellular damage is repaired.

REM(rapid eye movement)

Active type of sleep where most of a person's dreaming occurs. Voluntary muscles are inhibited.

Non-REM sleep

Much deeper, more restful kind of sleep. The body is free to move.

Beta waves

Very small and very fast waves. A person who is awake and mentally active will show these on a EEG

Alpha waves

As the person relaxes and gets drowsy, these waves will appear. They are slightly larger and slower than beta waves.

Theta waves

Replace alpha waves. Even slower and larger.

Delta Waves

Stages 3 and 4. May last 15 to 30 minutes.

REM rebound

Greatly increased amounts of sleep after being deprived of REM sleep.

AIM(activation-information-mode)

Revised version of the activation-synthesis explanation of dreams in which information that is accessed during waking hours can have am influence on the synthesis of dreams.

Social Cognitive Theory of Hypnosis
