In what way is matter effected by molecules (think simply) |
They determine the behavior of matter around us. |
What does a chemical formula represent? |
Compounds. It represents at the least the represents the atoms present in the compound. |
What is the Hydrogen:Oxygen ratio in water? |
2:1. 2 Hydrogen for every 1 Oxygen |
How many atoms of each element are in Ca(NO3)2 |
1 Ca 2 N 6 O |
Define and Ionic Compound |
Compound containing a metal and one or more nonmetals. |
Metals have a tendency to do what with Electrons? |
They tend to lose electrons. |
What kind of bond is NaCl and why is it called that bond? |
NaCl is an Ionic bond because Na is a metal while Chlorine is a nonmetal. Na is positively charged because it more commonly gives away electrons while Cl is negatively because it takes them. When Na and Cl combine they fill each others outer orbits becoming balanced and creating an Ionic Bond. |
What are solutions with dissolved Ions in them called (ex. Na+ and Cl-) |
Electrolyte Solutions |
Define a Molecular Compound |
A compound containing only nonmetals (and no ions). |
Define a Covalent Bond |
When non-metals share electrons and bond together (not always equally shared) |
Ionic compounds are made by repeating negative and positive ions, how are molecular compounds made in contrast? |
Molecular compounds are are composed of two or more atoms bonded together to form molecules. |
Is LiBr Ionic or Molecular compound |
Ionic, Lithium is a metal and Bromine is a Non-Metal |
Is C6H12O6 an Ionic or Molecular compound |
Molecular compound. No metals are present, thus meaning that it is a Molecular compound |
What is the chemical compound of Ammonia? |
NH3 |
What is the form for naming two element Ionic compounds? |
Name of cation (metal) + Base name of anion (non-metal)+ ide |
What is the name of NaCl |
Sodium Chloride |
What is the name of MgO |
Magnesium Oxide |
what is the name of Li2S and why are two Lithium atoms required to balance this Ionic compound? |
Lithium Sulfide. The reason that 2 Lithium atoms are required is because they each have 1 available valence electron while Sulfer requires two to fill its outer orbit. Meaning you need two electrons to create a neutral compound. |
What is the formula for Carbonate? |
CO32- |
What is the formula for Bicarbonate? |
HCO3- |
What is the formula for Hydroxide? |
OH- |
What is the formula for Nitrate? |
NO3- |
What is the formula for Phosphate? |
PO43- |
What is the formula for Sulfate? |
SO42- |
What are Polyatomic Ions? |
Ionic compounds that contain anions with more than one atom. Poly-many atomic- atoms. many atoms. |
What is the name for KNO3 |
Potassium Nitrate |
What is the name for NaOH? |
Sodium Hydroxide |
How do you name Molecular Compounds? |
Prefix name of more metallic element + Prefix name of less metallic element + ide |
What are the numeric values behind these prefixes? Mono, Di, Tri, Tetra, Penta, and Hexa? |
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 |
